What Is Pipe Bursting? All About Our Trenchless Method of Replacing Buried Pipelines

You’ve probably seen it before: Your neighbors have a failed sewer pipe in their yard, and there’s a huge trench cutting through their perfect lawn.

The company they hired to fix their pipes has taken days to repair the problem, leaving that trench to get muddy in the rain. The hole is filled in after the work is complete, but the lawn won’t be the same.

But now you know there is a better way: Advanced Trenchless Solutions can fix the pipes in your yard through a process called pipe bursting, which allows us to replace your pipes without digging a huge trench in your yard.

What is pipe bursting, and how can it help you? Let us explain.

What Is Pipe Bursting?

Pipe bursting is an innovative process that allows companies like Advanced Trenchless Solutions to repair pipes in your yard with minimal digging.

With this particular technique, the existing pipe is forced out by a powerful bursting tool, making space for the new pipe. The new pipe is attached to the tool and fills that void immediately after removing the burst pipe.

Pipe bursting uses a hydraulic or pneumatic expansion head – part of the bursting tool pulled through the existing pipe, usually by a cable or winch. As the head is pulled through the pipe, it pushes the old pipe outward until it breaks apart, creating space for the new pipe. Since the bursting device has the new pipe attached, it pulls the new pipe in place as it moves through the ground.

Pipe bursting is a long-term solution to many of your piping problems. If the section that needs replacement is at least 15 feet long, it can qualify for pipe bursting.

There are a few exceptions. If your existing pipes have already collapsed or are improperly graded or pitched, then we may not be able to use this process.

Trenchless Pipe Bursting vs Traditional Pipe Replacement

You may have experienced or seen your neighbors deal with traditional pipe replacement. It usually involves large machinery and a lot of digging to reach the broken sewer line.

Once a hole is dug, the professionals will replace the old pipe with all-new piping, ensuring that each joint is secure. While the result is similar, a once pristine front lawn becomes a mud pit mess when you opt for traditional pipe replacement.

Trenchless pipe bursting is an alternative method to traditional pipe replacement. Because pipe bursting only requires a small hole to access the sewer line, there is much less disruption to your yard.

As outlined above, pipe bursting uses a pneumatic head to burst open the old pipe, bringing along a new pipe with it and filling the gap. It’s a much smoother process than traditional pipe replacement and much cleaner, too.

What Are the Benefits of Pipe Bursting?

Pipe bursting has many benefits. For starters, this process allows for minimal disturbance to your property.

Less Disruptive Than Traditional Methods

Traditional methods of pipe repairs can be very disruptive, which makes pipe bursting an ideal solution to avoid turning your home into a construction zone. There are no dangerous holes for someone to fall in as you wait for your pipes to be repaired, and without digging trenches, we are able to replace your pipes without cutting down trees or removing native plants from your yard.

Environmentally Friendly

Pipe bursting is also environmentally friendly, as it causes fewer emissions! And since it does not disturb your lawn, local wildlife will not be affected by this method.

Able to Up-Size Your Pipeline

With pipe bursting, the gap created when the old pipe is burst can make room for a larger sewer line to accommodate more flow. This can be necessary if your family is larger or if you’ve added on an additional bathroom or other source of water waste.

Ability to Remove Lead Pipes

If you still have a lead service line, pipe bursting can help. The lead line will be destroyed while a new, plastic-based line is placed.

Less Waiting Time

Because the pipe bursting process is so quick, your home’s downtime for using water is shorter. With pipe bursting, the new line will be ready to use immediately, so there is no waiting around for cleaning & curing to take place with other pipe repair options.

When Is Pipe Bursting Necessary?

Pipe bursting may be necessary when a piping problem requires an innovative solution.

Quick Technique

Pipe bursting is also a quick technique that can get your pipes repaired in a fraction of the time it would take to repair them in the traditional way. This means you don’t have to wait for a working sewer system while the repairs are made. So when efficiency is a priority, choose pipe bursting.

Protects Landscaping

If you’ve put a lot of time and effort into your landscaping, pipe bursting is a great alternative. You won’t have to tear up your landscaping in order to have your pipes replaced.

Cleaner Option

Plus, pipe bursting is generally a much cleaner repair option than digging a large hole in your yard.

Long-Lasting Solution

Pipe bursting is also a long-lasting solution to your pipe problems. This solution can last over 50 years if done properly. This means fewer leaks and sewer line problems in the future.
